Your Voice

The internet is full of so much random stuff.  Every time I get on Facebook or Twitter, I am at amazed at how much junk I have to go through.  Every now and then, I see something that is important or funny but most of the time its just worthless blabber.  It seems as though everyone just wants a voice.  People use their voice for different reasons, of course.  But the internet has made it possible for voices to be heard that might have never been loud enough to be noticed.  What are you using your voice for?  You can encourage others, make people laugh, help those who are hurting, or maybe give a voice to someone who needs to be heard. The average Facebook user has 120 confirmed friends while the average Twitter user has 126 followers.  I know you may not have 3 gillion followers like the Biebs, but 126 people is still a large number.  Do something with the influence and platform you have right now.  If you were standing in a room of 126 people, what would you want to say?

Be intentional with your voice knowing that you have the power to do great things with it.

“Wrecking Ball” 2012/Columbia Records

Today has been circled on my calender for quite some time. Ever since I heard the announcement that Bruce Springsteen was coming back with a new album and tour, I have been anxiously awaiting this day. So I woke up this morning, took a shower, and drove to our local record shop to pick up my reserved “Wrecking Ball” LP. Luckily it came with a CD copy so I could listen to it on the way home. I had previewed some of the record on his website and heard the tracks he played on Jimmy Fallon but I have to say, after listening to this record straight through, I’m pretty speechless. Springsteen has always had a way of speaking to the times and for the people. This album does exactly that. There is more passion and lyrical sweat in the 5:47 of the title track than I’ve heard in a very long time. This is also the first record Bruce has done since Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici passed away. After reading Clarence Clemons’ autobiography this winter, I have a new and better understanding of who he was and the music he wanted the world to hear. Although there hasn’t been much saxophone on the last few Springsteen records, Clemons shines on “Land of Hopes and Dreams” with a solo that will make you cry if you let it. I am so glad that his horn made it on this track. It’s haunting and beautiful as all of the Big Man’s parts were. All in all, this album is an amazing record that will make you thankful that you were alive to hear it. If you are a fan of urgent lyrics and “real” music, this record, from one of history’s greatest songwriters and entertainers is for you. Welcome back, Bruce. You’ve still got it.

Favorite tracks: Wrecking Ball, Land of Hopes and Dreams, Death to My Hometown, You’ve Got It.

I Don’t Deserve It

I have been able to see and do so many great things in my life. Every time I think about it, I’m blown away at how good God has been to me. Today is one of those days.

Ever since I can remember, it has always been a dream of mine to play the Ryman Auditorium. There is so much history in that room. The artists that performed there over the years were the artists that paved the way for music today. When you walk into the place, you just feel it. It’s hard to describe.

Tonight is the night we get to play the Ryman. And if that’s not crazy enough, we get to play it two nights in a row. Both sold out. I can’t lie and say I’m not a little nervous. I think it’s a good nervous though. It’s the kind of nervous that makes you totally aware of your surroundings. It makes you take it all in and not miss a second.

I’m sure I will be replaying the next two nights in my head forever. One day I’ll be able to tell my kids and my grandkids about these special days. The greatest part about it is that my best friend is here to make sure I never forget. She’s also my wife.

I’m a normal guy getting to live an extraordinary life. I don’t deserve it. But I pray whether extraordinary continues to be the norm or not, I’ll never forget what and who it’s all about. Blessed.

Finishing What You Start

I love books.

I love the way a book feels in your hands.  There is something about the binding and the fine print that makes you feel smarter just by holding it.  In a day where you can have 1,000 books on a device as small as your cell phone, I still buy hardbacks.  In my music room at home, I have a bookshelf full of them.  There’s fiction, non-fiction, inspirational, classics, reference, self-help, and even some children’s books from when I was a kid.  If you were to walk in there, you would think that I read all the time.  Well, I do.  Kinda.

I haven’t finished a book in years.  The last time I finished a book was probably back in high school.  I usually have several books with me when I travel but I never finish them.  You could call me a 40% reader.  This means I will only finish 40% of the book I’m holding.  I get distracted, put it down, and never pick it back up.  In the last 8 years, I have started more books than I can even remember.  But I love books.

So many things in our lives can be compared to this “problem” of starting something you can’t or won’t finish.  How many times do we do this?  It’s not just books for me.  I can start cleaning the house, get distracted, sit down, and not finish the job I started.  Or I can say I’m going to do something and either forget or just neglect it long enough that someone else does it, or its just never accomplished.  I wonder what life would look like if we combined our desire to do things, with real discipline to follow through and actually do it.

It’s February 10th and I have already dropped the ball on most of the things I wanted to do differently this year.  Whether it be laziness, busyness, or both, I haven’t done them.  The reason I feel we never finish what we start is because we say we want to do something but don’t have the discipline and perseverance to actually fulfill our desires.  If I would’ve had a plan and stuck to it (even when I didn’t feel like it), my music room would be full of books that I had actually read.  It wouldn’t be full of empty desires and failed attempts at following through.

We all have areas in our life where we need discipline.  Maybe its reading books.  Maybe its spending time with your family.  Maybe its working out.  Maybe its spending time with God.  Whatever your “thing” is, I hope you see it through.  You can desire something all you want but until you put your desires into motion and actually do it, you’ll never accomplish anything.  Desire will only get you so far.

Do what you love.  Love what you do.  Finish what you start and finish strong.

It’s Groundhog Day…

“What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?”

One of my all-time favorite movies is Groundhog Day with Bill Murray.  There are very few movies that I can watch over and over (no pun intended) without getting tired of them.  When I am on the road, this movie is always in my bunk.  So I thought since today is February 2nd, it would only be appropriate to mention it.  If you have been hiding under a rock since 1993 and have never seen Groundhog Day, maybe today would be a great day to change that.  Am I right or am I right? Or am I right? Am I right?
